I was wondering why new cars, for example, from Japan, would be brought to North America a on a ship, and not on a plane. Does anyone know? Thanks
Because boats are bigger and if you were to put something as heavy as a car on an aeroplane it would not be able to take off. But because boats are bigger its easier to transport them.
It's cheaper. Freight transportation is based on the weight of the item being shipped. Using a plane would be prohibitively expensive.
Even using the world's largest airplane, you could only transport 6-8 automobiles at a time, while you can load hundreds of them on a ship. It's a matter of cost and efficiency.
It's cheaper and more economical to load a hundred cars on a cargo ship to get them to the USA than by plane, which carries much less weight.
Consider it like this. A large ocean freighter can stack say 100 53' cargo boxes on the deck. Each one of those cargo boxes can carry 3 cars. That's 300 cars in that one shipment. Meanwhile, on a plane, you might be able to carry 5? 6? cars. After doing some research, the biggest cargo carriers can hold up to 15,000 TEUs or "twenty foot equivalent units". These are boxes that are 20 feet long, 8 feet wide and anywhere from 4.5 -9 feet tall. That means 1 of these cargo ships could carry up to 15,000 cars at a time.
