nikon d300 vs. canon EOS 50d, is the nikon worth the extra $$$?

I am just starting to get into photography and I am interested in purchasing a DSLR. I'm usually pretty good with electronics and I am the type of person who studies the manual of electronics till I know them inside out. I've already used my higher end point and shoot cameras to their limits and now i'm looking to get a dslr. I will be photographing moving objects, animals. Then of course the normal still pictures as well. I was comparing the Canon EOS 50d to the Nikon D300, I was wondering what your opinions are on them and if hte nikon D300 is worth the extra money. I know it has the 51 AF points so that's an advantage. But is it really worth the extra money? Also, if anyone know where Nikon and Canon are made let me know. Are they both made in japan? Thanks

I would say Nikon is worth the extra money; but whats going to cost you money either way...is lens selection which could cost more than the camera, especially if you're going to be shooting moving animals from a distance because you'll need an expensive fast zoom.

yes it is. So i have heard. I want to get the canon price but know nikon is way better but the canon is cheaper. so i want live view. if i want that on nikon, its the d90 but i can get live view for £400-£500 odd in a canon EOS 450d and it has live view AND 12 mp but at that price but i have been advised Nikon is the way to go so yes...extra money for nikon. ps the d80 doesnt have live view

Both are giood cameras, and the output on both of these are very close. But like everyone I have a preference. I have the D300 and I love it It does a great job and is full featured. I have used Nikon film cameras since the 70s and lenses I bought back then work great on the D300. Its got a magnesium weather sealed body making a solid durable camera
