How long would it take to travel all of Japan by train?

I don't know at all. Could take as long as your life time. I've just now checked total mileage of railroad of Japan and it's 27,000km.There are innumerable rail roads spread all over Japanese islands. What you are asking is beyond my imagination. Only if you can understand Japanese, you can get in touch with serious railroad funs to help you get much more detailed information. Good luck!

I found out that there is a person who posted the same question in Japan, and the question was answered beautifully, but I'm too lazy to translate it all, so I'll just sum it up for you. If you travel Japan counter-clock wise start from Tokyo through Hokkaido Kyushuu, Osaka, Nagoya and back to Tokyo. It would take you 12 days and a half. If you want to travel every railroad there is in Japan. I don't know. I couldn't find the definite answer for that, but there are people who accomplished that goal. There is even an entry for Japanese is called Kanjo(complete riding) According to this are 10,219 people who are trying to accomplish that goal, and it's just the count the subscribers of the site. And many of them are already accomplished it. There are 27,500 km railroads in Japan. I'm sure it would take you months or years to accomplish to ride all of them. My sincere Kudos to them.
