Limited budget to travel to Japan. HELP?
I have heard from a few people that you need at least 6 months left on your passport, but i have checked embassy websites and have read nothing on the matter, and frankly the thought of being able to use a passport only up to 6 months before the expiry date seems to defeat the purpose of an expiry date. So am i allowed?
Most countries will not issue a visa to someone whose passport expires in 3 months or less (each country has their own policy). So it difficult to travel with a rapidly expiring passport. Certainly they won't issue a visa that will mean you only have a few days left on your passport at the end, because afterall planes get delayed, people get sick etc. It means your passport has expired. Expired IDs are hard to renew. So I would say the airline won't even let you on the plane to go to Japan (airlines are required by international law to pay the cost of your return flight if they let you on a plane without valid documentation).
I've heard the same thing. If you only have a few days left on it when you are due to fly back then they probably won't let you fly OUT. I'd suggest contacting the British Embassy, The Japanese Embassy and your airline directly and ask for that information. Ask them for WRITTEN confirmation that you can fly there and back... Best bet I think would be to contact the passport office to see if they can help? Enjoy your trip!
You must have a valid passport and an onward/return ticket. British nationals wishing to visit Japan for three months or less for business, tourism or family purposes etc (but not to work for a local employer) may do so without a visa. The Japanese authorities stipulate no minimum period of validity on your passport. However, before departure you should check that your passport remains valid and acceptable to the immigration authorities of the country to which you are travelling. On a direct flight back home you could even travel on an expired British .. Some Asian countries like the Philippines or Singapore require foreign visitors to hold a passport which must be valid for at least another 6 months either on arrival or beyond the period of stay. The U.K. passport agency therefore adds up to 9 month validation for a passport renewal. If your passport should expire in November 2010 and you apply for renewal now, the new passport will be valid until November .. http://www.timaticweb.com/cgi-bin/tim_website_client.cgi?SpecData=1&VISA=&HEALTH=&page=both&NA=GB&AR=00&DE=JP&VT=GB&EM=GB&PASSTYPES=PASS&user=SKYWEB&subuser=SKYWEB1 ..
