I am an American living and working in Japan. If I want to go to India or China for 3-4 weeks during the summer, is there any process I need to go to and will it endanger my visa status? I know I need a re-entry permit but where do I get that/who do I give it to? How do I know which vaccines I need and how do I make sure the right people know that I get the right forms in order to get back into Japan without a problem? Is there anything else I should know?
For going to India and/or China, you need to apply trip visa at those embassy in Japan at first. It takes about one month to get visas. Tetanus, Hepatitis type A & B, Rabies, Encephalitis, Polio Measles vaccination would be optional for your own safeness, not required as duty to enter the countries. Cholera and Plague vaccination are not so effective completely. All those would be just up to your budget and interest. Re-entry permission(multiple would be economical and convenient) must be prepared at your local immigration office prior to leaving. Don't forget to keep re-entry card before leaving at the departure control gate in Japanese airport.
To get a re-entry permit you need to go to the Japanese Immigration Office servicing your area. If you live in Tokyo, there's one in Tachikawa (good if you have a car) and one in Shinagawa. If you live elsewhere check with the Immigration website for the nearest one near you. The cost is 3000yen for a one time use re-entry permit or 6000 yen for a multiple re-entry permit, I suggest getting the multiple re-entry one, because it pays itself off after leaving the country twice. Here is the form you have to fill for visiting China, you need to get a Chinese Embassy (except for Hong Kong and Maccau, which you do not need a visa), but anywhere else in China you need to get a Chinese Visa from the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in Japan. Travel agents in Japan can also assist you with this as well. Same for India.
