Actually one reactor is in melt-down. The officials say not to worry. Background radiation levels on the west coast of North America have already started to rise but the experts say there is no connection. But then they aren't in the zone being hit.

Since you posted your question, Tokyo Electric has admitted that currently two reactors are in melt-down condition. Currently the wind is blowing the radiation towards the U.S., but the wind is predicted to shift to the south. Both reactors are much worse than the Three-Mile Island release, but not as bad as Chernobyl yet.
